Aquarium lighting serves two distinct purposes that require different approaches: making your tank look good and keeping photosynthetic organisms alive. Fish-only tanks just need lighting you find attractive. Planted tanks and reef tanks have biological requirements that constrain your options significantly.

Light for Viewing vs Light for Life

Fish-only freshwater tanks have minimal lighting requirements. Fish don't photosynthesize—they need light to see, find food, and maintain day/night cycles, but intensity and spectrum barely matter. Virtually any aquarium light works; choose based on aesthetics and budget.

Planted freshwater tanks require lighting that drives plant photosynthesis. Insufficient light causes plants to die, rot, and pollute water. Excessive light promotes algae growth that overwhelms plants. Finding the balance requires understanding intensity (PAR), spectrum, and photoperiod.

Reef saltwater tanks demand the most from lighting. Coral zooxanthellae require specific intensities and spectrums to thrive. Inadequate lighting means coral death; mismatched spectrum means browning or bleaching. Reef lighting represents a substantial investment and requires research for specific coral species.

Understanding Light Specifications

Watts measure energy consumption, not light output. LED efficiency varies dramatically—a 30-watt LED might outperform a 100-watt fluorescent. Ignore wattage for comparison; it tells you electricity cost, not performance.

Lumens measure visible brightness to human eyes. This matters for viewing aesthetics but not for plant or coral growth. A light can be blindingly bright (high lumens) while lacking the spectrum plants need.

Timers are essential. Manual switching creates inconsistency and gets forgotten. Simple outlet timers ($5-15) work for basic setups; smart plugs allow schedule adjustments from your phone.

Practical Recommendations

For fish-only tanks: Any LED fixture that looks good to you works fine. Clip-on LEDs, hood-integrated lights, or budget light strips—there's no wrong choice. Spend minimally.
